I have experience of working with children and young people facing a variety of difficulties and challenges, both in mainstream school and specialist settings.
I have worked in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) with 11-18 year olds with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties supporting them in all aspects of their life. These young people were not able to attend mainstream schools due to being unable to cope in that setting because of their Special Educational Needs or had been excluded due to their behaviour.
During this time I worked with young people with diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Tourettes Syndrome and Hearing Impairment as well as some young people with rarer genetic conditions, such as Kleinfelters Syndrome.
During my time spent in primary school, I worked with children carrying out interventions to address barriers to their learning. I ran social skills groups and language intervention groups, as well as individual sessions addressing issues such as self–esteem, bereavement, anxiety, anger and emotional regulation. I also ran support groups for parents around sleep and other issues, such as routines and behaviour at home.
My last two years in School were spent in Foundation Stage, working mainly with children with additional needs. I began to run intensive interaction one to one sessions with our non-verbal children who either had, or were awaiting a diagnosis of autism. I also carried out various interventions with children with Global Developmental Delay to develop their basic skills and work on their communication and language.
During my time working in schools I have had the opportunity to work with many outstanding professionals such as teachers, Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, School and Mental Health Nurses to name a few. Working in such a multidisciplinary team has enabled me to take into account the full picture of a child's needs and plan an intervention program accordingly.
